The Tampa Police Department is proud to announce a decrease in violent crime in the community. Data from a recently released violent crime survey by the Major Cities Chiefs Association shows that Tampa has the second-lowest per capita violent crime rate among surveyed cities of similar population sizes. Cities of comparable size included Arlington, VA, Aurora, CO, Buffalo, NY, Cincinnati, OH, Cleveland, OH, Honolulu, HI, Miami, FL, Minneapolis, MN, New Orleans, LA, Newark, NJ, Oakland, CA, Orlando, FL, Pittsburgh, PA, St. Lois, MO and Wichita, KS.
A total of 59 major US cities were surveyed, excluding 11 counties. Cities range in population from the largest major city (New York City, NY) to the smallest major city (Salt Lake City, UT). Tampa ranked 14th for lowest overall violent crime rate in 2022.
“These promising statistics show that while there is still work to be done, we are on the right track, continuing to reduce violent crime in our city. The reduction has not come without hard work by the men and women of the Department of Tampa Police Department and implementing a variety of strategies to continue to reduce crime,” said Acting Police Chief Lee Bercaw. “From strengthening our law enforcement efforts to increasing our focus on crime prevention programs and community-oriented policing, we have taken a holistic approach to creating a safe and secure environment for our residents, visitors and businesses. The survey it just serves as further motivation for our officers to keep pushing for new ways to ensure our communities remain safe and crime-free.”
“This data confirms what we already know, Tampa is one of the safest large cities in the United States where you can find a well-paying job in one of the many growing companies and also raise your family in a safe community,” the mayor said. Jane Castor. “I truly believe this city, where I was born and raised, has been one of the best kept secrets for a long time, but as we have seen in our recent population growth, the secret is out! I am grateful for the dedication law enforcement works tirelessly every day to continue to ensure our safety”.
