WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) – A South Wichita family escaped unharmed after someone shot up their home Thursday night.
Many of the children were asleep when it happened. Now, the police want help finding the gunman.
Thirteen-year-old Raúl Perez showed KAKE the bullet holes left behind.
“We didn’t know what was going on until we started hearing those shots,” Perez said. Along with his brothers aged 5 to 18 and his father were all at home when it happened.
He said they all fell to the ground quickly. Her mother’s car was hit five times and their kitchen window was shattered.
“That’s usually where my dad sits,” Perez said. “But nobody was in the kitchen, so everyone’s fine.”
Wichita Police have released a security video of a neighbor. You can see a black SUV stop and turn around. Then you see a man approaching the Perez house. At that moment, police say he fired multiple shots hitting the car and the family home.
The video then shows the same man running towards that black SUV and getting in before it drives away.
“We’re glad no one was hurt,” Crime Stoppers coordinator Officer Trevor Macy said. “It was still a very serious event when someone is willing to shoot up a squat, including children. This is someone we really want to put into custody.”
It happened around 9:15 pm on Thursday February 16 night in the 1300 block of East Fortuna near Hydraulic and I-135.
Perez says he and his family are thankful no one was affected. He has no idea why his home is being targeted, but he says that until the gunman is caught, he is very careful.
“We stay out of where they fired in case they come back and fire again,” Perez said. “We’re just paying attention and observing our surroundings.”
