A cool end to the workweek in Kansas City will give way to unusually warm weather that could include heavy rain to heavy storms, according to the Kansas City National Weather Service.
But first, the Metro will have to endure a cold Friday that could see some freezing drizzle or a light winter mix in the evening.
The morning started off chilly as temperatures dropped to 11 degrees just before 7am at Kansas City International Airport. The winds, however, made it feel colder as the wind chill dropped to -5 degrees.
Conditions are expected to gradually warm in the mid to upper 30’s under partly sunny skies in the Metro. A freezing drizzle or light winter drizzle will be possible, primarily south of US Highway 50 in the southern portion of the Kansas City area.
“With surface temperatures expected to hover near freezing, slippery conditions can be expected if precipitation develops,” the weather service said in its discussion of the forecast.
Conditions will rebound this weekend, with temperatures climbing into the 50s on Saturday and 60s on Sunday, the weather service said. Typically, Kansas City sees temperatures in the upper 40s this time of year.
Showers and thunderstorms are expected on Sunday evening, bringing widespread rain to the area until Monday morning. Some of the nighttime storms could be severe to intense, and heavy rain is possible from eastern Kansas through western and northwestern Missouri.
Between 1 and 1.5 inches of rain is expected in the Kansas City area overnight. Strong winds are also possible, with gusts of up to 40 mph in the Metro, according to the Weather Service.
