It’s tax season for Kansas City residents on both sides of the state line. The Internal Revenue Service has been accepting tax returns since January, and you have a couple of months left to file your return if you haven’t already.
The IRS expects more than 168 million returns this year. You may want to get started if you haven’t filed your taxes yet.
WHAT DO I NEED TO DEFINE MY TAXES?
You’ll need this essential information before filing your taxes this year:
-
Fiscal code or fiscal code
-
Your date of birth
-
Income forms, such as a W2 if you were employed, a 1099-G if you were unemployed, or 1099-NEC if you were self-employed or an independent contractor
-
Any type of deduction, such as charitable contributions or medical expenses
WHAT IS THE LAST DAY TO SUBMIT MY TAXES?
The deadline to file a 2022 tax return is April 18 in both Kansas and Missouri. If you can’t file by then, apply for an extension and pay the fees you owe by the April due date. If you’re applying for a 2022 tax return extension, you’ll have until October 16 to file your return.
Taxpayers have three more days to file this year because the typical April 15 deadline falls on a weekend and is followed by Washington DC’s Emancipation Day on April 17.
WHERE CAN I SUBMIT MY TAXES?
The IRS will allow you to file on their website for free if your adjusted gross income is less than $73,000. Some of their free tax filing services include:
In Kansas, you can also file on WebFile, but only if you’ve filed an income tax return in the state within the past three years.
You can use any tax filing service, such as H&R Block, Jackson Hewitt, or TurboTax, to file your taxes. These services may ask you to pay to declare taxes.
WHEN WILL I RECEIVE MY TAX REFUND?
According to the IRS website, you could get your tax refund within 21 days if you do the following:
-
Fill out your 2022 tax return electronically
-
Request to receive your refund in a direct deposit
-
Submit your 2022 tax return without errors or problems
HOW CAN I FIND MY REFUND STATUS?
Check your federal refund status 24 hours after filing online with your Social Security number, filing status, and refund amount on your 2022 tax return. Taxpayers filing a paper return must wait at least six months before checking the status of the refund.
You can also check the status of your state refund by entering your Social Security number, filing status, and refund amount on these websites:
Refund status for federal and state tax refunds is updated daily. If you don’t see the refund information, please try again the following day.
DO I NEED TO SUBMIT MY 2023 TAXES IF I AM WAITING FOR EARLIER RETURNS?
Taxpayers are expected to file 2022 tax returns even if they are awaiting earlier returns. Error-free paper and electronic tax returns filed before November have been processed, according to the IRS, but there is still work to be done.
“This work will not affect tax refund times for people filing in 2023,” the IRS wrote on its website. “But the IRS continues to urge people to make sure they file an error-free tax return this tax season to avoid delays.”
Information on the status of your 2022 tax returns is on the IRS website.
