KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Jackson County Attorney’s Office charged a Kansas City man on Saturday with shooting and killing a 4-year-old boy in 2012.
Martin Olmedo, 31, faces second-degree murder, illegal use of a weapon and armed criminal action.
According to court documents, officers on December 15, 2012, responded to the 2400 block of Denver in the northeast Kansas City area and located four victims in a brown 1991 Chevrolet Lumina. One victim was a 4-year-old boy , Aydan Perea, hit by a gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital and later died.
One of the other victims was shot in the shoulder.
According to court records, dated 16 December 2012, the agents identified a vehicle registered to Olmedo. After obtaining a search warrant, officers found spent shell casings, the same shell casings at the crime scene the day before.
Detectives said Olmedo told police detectives he was in the vehicle during the shooting the day before. Officers found a large-caliber shell casing in the back seat, a check of Olmedo’s phone found he was hitting a cell tower in the area of the shooting at the time it occurred.
Witnesses also told police that Olmedo was heard to be involved in the shooting.

We often remind families torn apart by murder that these cases are never out of our reach because there is no statute of limitations for homicides. The apprehension of this defendant demonstrates this truth.

Olmedo is in custody on $500,000 cash bail.
Olmedo was in the Jackson County Detention Center this week after units of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Kansas City, Texas and Mexico coordinated a pullout after he was deported from Mexico.
