An inmate found unconscious in a cell at Travis County Jail on Sunday dies in hospital

On Monday, officials said the 47-year-old inmate, who was found unconscious in his cell on Sunday morning at the Travis County Jail, died in hospital.

Israel Resendiz Molina was found unconscious around 8 am. Prison medical staff administered CPR and he was taken to a hospital, where he later died, Travis County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Kristen Darke said in a press release Monday.

More:Austin officers fatally shot and killed a man Sunday night during a gun incident downtown on West Sixth Street.

Officials did not give the cause of Molina’s death, but said an autopsy was performed on Sunday and the final result is expected.

Molina was jailed on Jan. 10 on charges of drunk driving, Dark said.

The sheriff’s office has launched an investigation, she said, involving the Department of the Interior, the CID, the Texas Rangers and the Travis County Medical Examiner, as is usually the case with a death in custody.
