Ascension confirms layoffs in Texas

Austin (KXAN) — Medical company Ascension has confirmed layoffs in Texas.

KXAN has asked the healthcare provider for more information on how many employees have been laid off, which positions have been affected, and whether affected employees have received severance pay.

This is the Ascension Texas statement for KXAN:

The global COVID-19 pandemic has taken a toll on healthcare systems across the country, and Ascension Texas is no exception.

We continue to refine the way we provide care in these challenging environments and further align our strategies and structure to best support patient care initiatives to ensure the long-term sustainability of our organization as we continue to provide compassionate and personalized care to all.

Every effort has been made to minimize the impact on patient care at the bedside, and we have focused primarily on non-clinical support functions.

Ascension also did not provide information on which properties were affected by the layoffs. The company has Texas offices in Austin, Round Rock, Cedar Park, Kyle and Waco, according to its website.

A spokesman for the National Nurses United union said the union was not notified of the dismissal of nurses at the hospital. Last September, 800 Ascension Seton Medical Center nurses voted to unionize.

Ascension Seton is one of the top employers in the Austin region, with over 11,000 employees, according to the May 2022 Austin Chamber of Commerce report.

These layoffs followed other healthcare layoffs in the Austin metro area. The Austin Radiological Association said it laid off less than 5% of its workforce in December, but did not disclose the number of employees affected.

Note: KXAN has requested additional information from Ascension Seton. This article will be updated as information becomes available.
