Austin FC notepad: League Cup groups announced, Wolf called up to U-20 squad

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Austin will play two Liga MX teams in the first round of the first-of-its-kind League Cup later this year, the team announced Friday.

Verde will play Mazatlan FC and FC Juarez in the group stage of the tournament, which is due to start on July 21 with the title match on August 19. Finished fourth in the Major League Soccer Supporters’ Shield last year, Austin FC is one of 16 MLS teams seeded for the tournament.

The tournament will open with 15 groups of three teams each, and the top two teams in the groups will advance to the 1/8 finals. LAFC and CF Pachuca, winners of MLS and Liga MX last season, advanced directly to the 1/8 finals. And you don’t have to play in the group stage. Matches will be played in MLS stadiums across the US and Canada in a regional format, with both leagues suspending their schedules as the tournament progresses.

Each MLS and Liga MX team participates in the tournament in a total of 77 matches. None of the group stage matches will end in a draw in this format. The winning team will receive three points, and if there is a tie after 90 minutes, each team will receive one point. In this case, the teams go directly to the penalty shoot-out, and the winner gets one more point in the group standings.

According to the tournament organizers, other tie-break rules for the group stage will be published later.

Austin FC is the best MLS team in the Southern region, finishing 3rd, while Dallas is ranked 6th in the region.

The top three teams finishing first in the League Cup will automatically qualify for the next season’s CONCACAF Champions League, with the champion going straight to the round of 16.

This season, Austin will compete not only in the League Cup, but also in the CONCACAF Champions League, in addition to the regular MLS schedule and the US Open Cup.

Ticket information will be available as the tournament approaches.

Owen Wolf called up to U-20 squad

Linebacker Owen Wolf, who will compete for more playing time with Verde this season, will train with the US Under-20 National Team from January 19 to 29. This is his first U-20 call-up and last year he had two U-19 call-ups.

The 18-year-old son of Austin FC head coach Josh Wolff helped the Under-19s win the Slovenian Nations Cup last fall and scored against Croatia in the second leg of the tournament.

Last year, he made 24 appearances for Verde in 11 starts, providing 85% of assists with 13 key assists and 15 interceptions.
