Chancellor’s Message: Weather Update

Dear colleagues and students!

As I continued to monitor weather forecasts, monitor road conditions, and review other closed schools, I came to the conclusion that this makes the most sense for students. The campus will be closed all day on January 25, 2023.

Staff members

Human Resources will credit you with 8 hours of inclement weather leave on January 25th. Only essential staff who are required to be on campus should plan to attend work.

All classes are normally taught in person and online, including classes offered through WATC, will be cancelled. We planned to hold online classes as usual; however, there are widespread power and internet outages that may affect the ability to meet some classes, and local providers cannot guarantee when services will be restored.

Campus Information

Catering services will continue to be offered at Lion’s Den.

The 24-hour computer lab will still be open, but the Boreham Library will be closed.

Any programs or activities on campus will be delayed or moved to Zoom, Teams, or another platform. Event organizers will notify those planning to attend how these programs will transition to remote delivery or new event dates.

Employees with keys who still go to campus despite the closure should notify UPD that they are in their offices in case of emergencies. Please call UPD Emergency Services at 479-788-7140. Of course, employees are strongly advised not to come to the campus until the weather conditions improve dramatically.

The Fort Smith Police Department said their officers are currently responding to 26 incidents and I definitely hope and pray that our Lions are not involved in any of them. Please do your part, stay off the roads if possible.

If you have questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me, your supervisor or faculty, or Human Resources. We are all here to help you during this stormy time.

Be safe and stay warm!

Terisa S. Riley
