Chieftain girls’ wrestling takes 11th of 34 teams on Saturday in Topeka | News, sports, work

The Tonganoxie High women’s wrestling team held their Saturday Washburn Women’s Invitational at Washburn Rural in Topeka. The girls placed 11th out of 34 teams.

Powerhouse Washburn Rural won its home match by an impressive 443 runs.

Columbus finished second with 255.5 and Spring Hill third with 233.5.

Tonganoxie scored 186 runs and narrowly missed finishing in the Top 10.

Fort Scott placed 10th with 187.

The invitation attracted teams of various sizes, from 6A and 5A schools like Manhattan and Gardner-Edgerton to 3A and 2A schools like Silver Lake, Oskaloosa and Minneapolis.

Extraordinary Holly Colvert once again took gold. Now 25-1 on the season, she defeated Seaman’s Abagail Soppe (7-9) by falling 19 seconds into the game.

Autumn Wilson (19-9) placed second on 105 for the Chieftains after facing Oskaloosa’s Holly Thacher (17-2) in the championship. Wilson lost, 8-1, in the final.

Others in the race were: Grae Vanderweide (13-16), who placed 16th at 120, Stella Bradley (23-12), ninth overall at 125, Mackenzie Colgrove (20-13), who placed 11th at 140 and Sydney Shepherd (20 -14), who finished 11th at 145.

Grae Steanx faced opponents from bigger schools and finished fifth at 170. She is now 24-9 on the year.

Kelly Duncan (4-12) ranked 16th out of 190.

And at 2235, Anna Tochtrop (9-15) placed 11th.

The next fixture for the women’s team is the Frontier League meet. It will be next Wednesday, February 1, with the first game starting at 4:30 p.m., after which it will be regionals and then set the next two weekends for the Chieftains.
