College Sports: MCC baseball team wins 29 in Kansas sweep (2/20/23)

PARSONS, Kan. – The McCook Community College baseball team won a pair of games Sunday against Labette Community College 18-3 and 11-1.

“Today was a good day. We pulled all three stages together for the most part, we didn’t give up much in terms of racing,” said MCC coach Jon Olsen.

MCC scored in every inning in Game 1 and batted 13 in five innings. MCC’s offense was led by home runs by freshmen Michael Quick (Oshawa, Ontario), Zeke Minic (Thornton, Colorado), and Jason Serafinchon (Spruce Grove, Alberta).

“We played quite well up front and went really well in both matches and with two strong performances on the mound,” said Olsen.

Sophomore Mikey Acierno (sophomore, Thornton, Colo.) had a complete game win in game one and freshman Myles Chabi (Sydney, Australia) pitched a complete game in five innings in Game 2.

MCC goes 4-5 on the season with five games on tap this week starting at noon Monday with the final game of the three-game series with Labette. MCC travels to Garden City for a 2pm game on Wednesday.

MCC is expected to open the Region IX portion of the schedule at home on Saturday with a three-game series against Northeastern Junior College. Saturday’s doubleheader starts at 2.00pm, Sunday’s match starts at 1.00pm

GAME 1 – McCook 18, Labette CC 3: MCC scored single runs in the first and second innings, added four each in the third and fourth, and piled up eight runs in the fifth.

Michael Quick led the MCC offense with one home run and one double with three RBI. Ethan Murdoch (sophomore, Swift Current, Saskatchewan) smashed a pair of doubles and a single. Zeke Minic hit a three-run homer. Jason Serafinchon had a home run, a single and three drives and sophomore Josh Maysonave (Austin, Texas) had a two-hit game with two RBI.

Starting pitcher Mikey Acierno drove far on the mound to pick up the win. He allowed five hits, two earned runs, one walk and struck out three.

GAME 2 –McCook 11, Labette CC 1: The MCC offense picked up where it left off in Game 1 with a five-run first inning. Sophomore Oliver Davies (Canberra, Australia) fielded a bases-loaded double to put MCC up 2-0 and Jason Serafinchon followed with a two-run double to give it a 4-0 lead. Sophomore Abel Reyes (sophomore, Puerto Caimito, Panama) fielded an RBI double to put MCC up 5-0.

After an MCC error in the bottom of the first, pitcher Myles Chabi allowed his only hit of the game to put the Cardinals on the board.

Davies put MCC up 7-1 in the second with a brace.

“Ollie had a couple big doubles his first two at bats,” Olsen said.

After two outs in the fifth inning, MCC put on the board four more runs, marked by a double by sophomore transfer Alliskair Descartes (Thornton, Colo.), an RBI single by sophomore Trent Elshire (Plattsmouth), and a home run double run by Michael Quick, his second of the day.

MCC finished with 10 hits, including three by Ethan Murdoch and two by Davies.

Chabi collected the win on the mound in five innings, allowing only one hit, no earned runs, two walks and seven strikeouts.
