A Scranton man was held in connection with felonies including driving under the influence after a fatal head-on collision occurred around 9 p.m. Wednesday while driving the wrong way on US Highway 75 in southern Shawnee County, they said the authorities.
Alyssa Lee, 16, of Carbondale, died after being involved in the crash, which occurred about a fifth of a mile north of SW 97th Street, according to a Kansas Highway Patrol crash report.
Anthony Ray Tugwell, 40, was held Saturday at the Shawnee County Jail on $50,000 bond in connection with DUI, aggravated battery while DUI and driving in the opposite direction on a divided highway, prison records say. Formal charges had not been filed
The accidents involved a 2010 Chevrolet Impala, in which Tugwell drove northbound alone in the southbound lanes on a divided stretch of US-75, and a 1995 Dodge Intrepid, in which Lee drove southbound alone in the southbound lanes, the crash report said. .
Lee was taken to a hospital in Topeka, where she was later pronounced dead, while Tugwell was reported as likely injured but not hospitalized, the crash report said.
Tugwell was booked into the Shawnee County Jail at 2:14 am Thursday, according to jail records.
Both drivers were wearing seat belts, the accident report said.
