According to media reports, family members of a former ISD teaching assistant in Dallas are suing the county for negligence in connection with the death of a 56-year-old woman.
Court documents state that Sharla Sims was assaulted by a 17-year-old student with special needs at Spruce High School in January 2021, according to a report by WFAA-TV (Channel 8). The family is seeking $20 million in damages.
B’Ivory Lamarr, an attorney for the Sims family, told the news station that educators “should be able to do their job without fear of being violently attacked on the job.”
Lamarr, who spoke at Monday’s press conference, said The Sims had “repeatedly been hit and thrown on the bookshelf.”
Dallas ISD did not respond to the news station’s requests for comment, pointing to an ongoing lawsuit.
