WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — Drivers in the North Junction construction area in Wichita could see a bridge collapse this Saturday, January 28.
The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) plans to close southbound Interstate 135 so that workers can demolish an adjacent bridge.
KDOT will close I-135 southbound from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm at the North Interchange. The closure will occur at K-254 westbound and I-235 southbound.
During the closure, motorists heading south on I-135 will be diverted onto Interstate 235 southbound and then onto Broadway Avenue.
At the end of the Broadway off-ramp, motorists will need to take a right and then another right to merge onto the on-ramp to I-235 northbound. As soon as drivers are on I-235, they should take the I-135 Southbound exit to continue in their original direction.
The North Junction construction project is in what KDOT is calling Gold Project Phase 2A. Work began in April 2021. The three-year project will replace ramps from I-135 to southbound I-235 and westbound K-96.
