HOUSTON (KIAH) The runner-up at last year’s World Ax Throwing Championship lives in Houston and co-owns an ax throwing saloon.
Colby Dean lost in the final of this tournament in Wisconsin in early December, but he still enjoyed it and landed on ESPN to broadcast the championship game.
Dean and a business partner bought Hurling Hatches on the Gulf Freeway just north of the Sam Houston Tollway just after Thanksgiving.
He says that seven of the top 30 ax throwers in the world compete in leagues at his salon, which also gives him the opportunity to hone his skills.
“I really got to work out,” Dean said. “I haven’t had the opportunity to practice or be able to do it in the last year and a half. Just life, family – throwing axes fades into the background. So it was nice to be able to train and get reps before the Worlds.”
