This will be the first time Houston has hosted a title game for the sport and will be one of the biggest events ever held at NRG Stadium.
The 2024 National Championship is scheduled for January 8 next year, the final year of the current four-team playoff format. The college football playoffs will expand to 12 teams next season.
Houston and NRG Stadium are not new to the sporting spotlight, having hosted many world-class events over the past 20 years.
The list includes the 2016 NCAA Men’s Basketball Final Four, the 2017 Super Bowl LI, and numerous high-profile international football exhibition games.
Houston will also host the 2023 Final Four this spring and will be one of 11 U.S. stadiums to host games during the 2026 World Cup.
While the NRG is older than similar stadiums such as Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta and Sofi Stadium in California, which hosted the national championship this year, the NRG has undergone several upgrades over the past two decades to remain competitive as a venue for major events.
