Independent bookstore opens in Brownsville

BROWNSVILLE, TX (ValleyCentral) — Brownsville is finally getting an independent bookstore.

Buho will be located in the historic 101-year-old Calderoni building on Washington Street next to the Market Square in the city center.

Founder Gilbert Hernandez said that Brownsville was the largest metropolitan area without a bookstore, so he gathered volunteers and books to open it.

“Well, it was a huge dream that Brownsville readers have seen for years, literally years,” Hernandez said. “People come in tears, they are so grateful and there is pressure on me to make this dream a reality for them and for me.”

Hernandez began stockpiling and hauling new and used books from his home and storage throughout the city for sale.

He first started his own business with the aim of maintaining and opening a permanent bookstore.

Hernandez said there is still a lot of work to be done, including acquiring dozens of shelves and thousands of books.

The official grand opening will take place later this year.
