Heading into Sunday’s AFC Championship game, Kansas City and Cincinnati will face off in different competition. The bottom four teams of the playoffs compete to see who can raise the most money for the local children’s hospital. Fans can donate at touchdownkidshealth.org to vote for their team. Each hospital has a goal of $15,000. The hospital with the most donations collected wins. The money goes to children’s heart research in honor of February Heart Month and Damar Hamlin, the Bills player who suffered a cardiac arrest on the field earlier this month. Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas and Cincinnati Mayor Aftab Pureval spoke about the competition Saturday afternoon outside Children’s Mercy. “While some of us are going to enjoy a football game tomorrow afternoon, there are many people, many staff here at Children’s Mercy who are working hard to make sure that the children of this region and across the country will be healthy. So, we want to make sure to celebrate it,” Lucas said. “An outstanding cause, an outstanding hospital and frankly, a great team effort.” “This effort among children’s hospitals, the best in the country, across the four playoff teams that still remain, is an example of just that, of putting this civic pride to work, this competitiveness, this togetherness, to really lift kids up.” competition wasn’t all they were talking about. Both mayors also commented on Pureval’s viral tweet earlier in the week, stating that Joe Burrow was Patrick Mahomes’ father. ‘I shouldn’t be trying to be funny, first of all, but, no, look, it was a joke that went down the drain. And certainly, lessons learned,” Pureval said. “I have so much passion for my city and for Bengalis, and I so desperately want them to do well. The competitive juices and love of Cincinnati really, really pulled me away at the said that Lucas is good friends with him and that their rivalry is friendly. Luke agreed. “He’s smart, kind and someone who cares about his city. And I’ve enjoyed every interaction with him,” Lucas said. “I was mayor for nearly four tumultuous years. And I said a lot of things, some of which I loved, some of which I maybe didn’t necessarily love after they came out. But I think what we always try to represent as leaders is a concern and a care for our city, our city’s institutions, and frankly, to be as supportive as possible. “Above all, both are proud of their cities. “Humility is a great thing about being from the Midwest, but it’s not a bad thing to be proud and see the success we’re having,” Lucas said. They hope raising money for children’s health will be a win-win for everyone.
