A Louisburg, Kan., judge resigned after the city learned that his law license was expiring while he was still serving as a judge. Former municipal judge David Ruder began serving as a judge in the city in 2008. In a statement released Tuesday by the city of Louisburg, the city said it learned in December 2022 that Ruder let his license expire. However, he still served. Ruder confirmed the accuracy of the information and resigned immediately, the city said. “He was hired, in part, based on claims that he was a licensed attorney,” the city said. “In December 2022, the city became aware that Mr. Ruder had allowed his attorney license to lapse and had never taken the certification exam that allows non-lawyers to sit as a municipal court judge.” Louissburg officials have launched an internal investigation, which is ongoing.
