LENEXA, Kan. — Law enforcement made an arrest in a violent GameStop robbery in Lenexa.
While the Johnson County District Attorney has charged one man with the crime, police are still looking for a second suspect.
Investigators said the pair tied up employees at the GameStop on Quivira Road on Feb. 12 before taking off with armfuls of video game consoles.
The man now charged is Sylvester Pickett, 30, of Kansas City, Kansas. He is being held on $200,000 bond as police push to figure out who the other man is in the surveillance video seen above.
“The Super Bowl was only hours away,” said Officer Danny Chavez, a spokesman for the Lenexa Police Department.
“Bound [an employee] up, dragged him to the back of the shop. One of the other employees was actually knocked to the floor. So this is a very violent robbery” Chavez said.
A customer even entered the store during the robbery. That person was also held captive as the suspects grabbed armfuls of PlayStation consoles and virtual reality equipment.
FOX4 asked the managers of an independent game store, Re-Sell Electronics in Independence, for their opinion on the situation.
“From the video I saw on Facebook, it looks like they knew exactly what they wanted and what they were looking for – the tallest and most expensive thing they have at GameStop,” said Elijah Newton, manager of Re-Cell Electronics.
“Most of the kind of stuff they would get, they’d almost have to sell on eBay, Craigslist, Amazon — something like that,” Newton said.
“It’s going to raise a lot of red flags to have the same item — a bunch of them — especially about something that’s scarce and expensive and the fact that they’re probably willing to take a lot less than it’s worth,” Newton added. “This will raise a lot of questions for people.”
These are some of the factors Lenexa Police want the public to consider as they seek hints as to the identity of the second man, the slimmer of the two wearing dark suits in the video.
The police notice his movement.
“We’re not sure if it’s an actual limp or just his gait,” Chavez said.
The GameStop cash register was also affected. The total estimate of how much the suspects got away with is over $10,000 in cash and equipment.
