SAN ANTONIO – A man who shot and killed another man during a robbery in October 2021 has been sentenced to prison.
Auguston Kane Medelez, 20, pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced on Monday to 24 years in prison. The verdict was handed down by the 226th district court.
San Antonio police said Medeles and another unidentified man pulled over Francisco Mendoza as he drove to work on the morning of October 11, 2021 in the 1600 block of West Ermine Boulevard.
The suspects seemed to need a phone or help, and when Mendoza stopped, they shot him and took his mobile, according to the arrest warrant. The suspects left the scene as Mendoza drove his truck into the fence. He was taken to the hospital, where he later died.
Surveillance footage shows the suspects entering another car before the shooting, the affidavit says.
Investigators said they were able to identify Medeles as a suspect based on a clear image from video footage, interviews with neighbors and anonymous reports. hints. However, when the officers tried to speak to him at his home, he was not there.
Through phone records, investigators determined that he was in contact with friends and family on the day of the incident.
Medelez told them he was wanted by the “laws” and asked if he could stay with them, the affidavit says.
His mother advised him to stay away from the crime scene and stay at a friend’s house, the affidavit says. Investigators said she wrote to him: “Or (I love you), son, I don’t want anything to happen to you.”
The suspect also contacted a friend and asked if he had any more nines, police said.
“This was significant as the shell casings found at the scene were 9mm shell casings,” the sworn letter says.
A warrant for his arrest was issued on February 8, 2022. the same day he was taken into custody.
He was charged in May.
