Man who strangled his wife in 2020 gets 35 years in prison

Arnold Garcia, 32, was sentenced to 35 years in prison in exchange for pleading guilty to the murder of his wife in 2020.

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas. A Houston man made a deal with prosecutors the day before a jury was to be elected in his murder case.

Arnold S. Garcia was sentenced to 35 years in prison in exchange for a guilty plea.

Garcia, 32, strangled his wife Elizabeth Hernandez in 2020.

“This was a wife and mother who was deeply loved by friends and family and who was killed trying to end an abusive relationship,” said Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg. “It’s far too common to see domestic violence escalate into murder, especially when the victim tries to escape.”

What happened

On September 20 of that year, Garcia called 911 and told police that he had killed his wife in their Philippine Street apartment near the intersection of Northwest Highway and Beltway 8 in northwestern Harris County.

When Harris County District 4 deputy constables arrived, they found Garcia with a bloody nose, scratches on his neck, a carpet burn on his elbow, and blood on his hands.

Garcia told investigators that he had shot Hernandez, 30, in self-defense three hours earlier.

The apartment was a mess, and in the middle of the night, Garcia called his parents to come and pick up their children and Hernandez’s children. When they arrived, Garcia expelled the children and refused to let the parents into the apartment.

abusive relationship

Those close to Hernandez told authorities that she tried to cut ties with Garcia because he was abusive towards her.

Hernandez and Garcia had two children, and she also had three children from other relationships.

“Friends and family, including her children, were willing to testify against Garcia because of everything he had done,” Assistant District Attorney Anthony Osso said. “She was a kind and caring mother who loved her children and whose children loved her. Her death was an incredible tragedy.”

Garcia’s past

In 2009, Garcia was arrested and charged after investigators said he hit his girlfriend in the leg with a key.

He pleaded guilty in the case and completed suspended probation.
