WICHITA – Destiny Masters put together the third-best pentathlon in Shocker history to take the conference lead with a top-10 NCAA mark on Friday at the Herm Wilson Invitational. “I am immensely proud of Destiny,” Rainbolt said. “She’s come a million miles from being a small-town Kansas girl who was just a high jumper in high school. She’s learned all of these events and she’s doing beautifully and competing really well.” After backing off and running the 800m to win the pentathlon again at the Lindeman Invitational last weekend, Masters used his stored energy to score 4,043 points to win the Herm Wilson pentathlon with three event personal bests. Her pentathlon mark ranks her tenth in the NCAA based on results recorded by TFRRS and ties two-time All-American and four-time NCAA Championship qualifier Tanya Friesen for third on the state’s all-time list of Wichita. Masters opened the pentathlon with a personal best of 8.47 in the 60m hurdles to score 1,024 runs and take a lead she would never give up. Moving up to the high jump, he equaled his season high from last weekend, clearing 1.76m/5’9.25″ to earn 928 points on the day’s highest jump. Masters proved, however, that he is in able to jump 1.82m/5’11.5″ but has yet to match that this season. “I think if we can fix some of these frustrating little flaws in the high jump, she’ll jump two meters and she’ll make it [to the NCAA Championships] even in the high jump,” Rainbolt said. “She’s a wonderful athlete and a very good competitor.” m/19’5.25” in the long jump. Her only remaining event being her biggest challenge, she ran a personal best of 2:34.40 in the 800m to give herself the best chance of qualifying for the national meet. “She struggled a lot with the 800m and she had some emotionally tough moments going through that event, so she came really far,” Rainbolt said. “She stood her ground, she held her own and ran a PR.” To qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships, Masters must remain in the NCAA Top 16, a feat no female Shocker has accomplished since Breanne Borman and newly appointed Wichita State Hall of Famer Nikki Larch-Miller qualified in the pentathlon in 2017. “I’m very proud of Destiny, and today was a wonderful effort on her part,” said Rainbolt. “I think either get to the national meet with that score or go to the conference meet and get a higher score to solidify her position at the national meet. 11″ to win the shot put.
