McKinney reaches finish line in Run-Rule win over FDU
SAN DIEGO – Wichita State hit three home runs, including a multi-home run by Lauren Mills to finish the Torero Classic with a 12-0 win over FDU in five innings Sunday afternoon.
Wichita State (8-3) finished the weekend with three straight run-rule hits and will now gear up for a big weekend in Denton, Texas at the North Texas Invitational. They will face a ranked team from North Texas twice.
Sydney McKinney recorded his 300th career hit Sunday, becoming the first Shocker to accomplish the feat in school history. He finished the day 3 for 3, increasing his season totals to 27 for 35 after 11 games. He has more hits in six of 11 games.
Mills finally came off a home run slump to start the season with two afternoons. He was 2 for 2 with two homers and five RBI. Her two round trips put her seventh in career highs with 34.
Addison Barnard was 2 for 2 with two runs and one RBI. Camryn Compton had a couple of hits and Taylor Sedlacek hit twice and homered.
Lauren Howell hit a career-high seven in 4.0 innings shutball to improve to 3-1 on the season. She only allowed two hits and a free pass. Kenzie Schopfer pitched last inning of relief.
Three consecutive singles to open the game by McKinney, Barnard, and Lauren Lucas led to Mills unloading his first home run of the season to trees for a grand slam. Two batters later, Sedlacek recorded his first career home run off a solo pitch to left center. The Shockers led 5-0 after the former’s top.
Wichita State’s lead expanded to 9-0 in the second on an RBI single by Barnard, RBI groundout by Lucas, an RBI double by Jones, and Mills’ second home run of the game.
With the bases loaded in the top of the third, Bailey Urban walked out with a hit two-run single. Another came on an FDU fielding error to put the Shockers up 12-0.
