Moran sworn into 1st congressional district casts speaker vote for McCarthy

US New Republican Rep. Nathaniel Moran was sworn into office early Saturday and said he looks forward to “becoming a strong and resilient voice in Congress and fighting for conservative legislation.”

Moran, a former Smith County judge, defeated Democrat Jmar Jefferson in the November general election and replaced longtime 1st Congressional District Representative Louis Gomert.

“I am honored to represent my family, friends and neighbors in Texas’ First Congressional District,” Moran said in a statement. — Early this morning (Saturday) I took a solemn oath to uphold and defend the Constitution, I promise to fight for the conservative values that the people of East Texas hold dear. We have a tough road ahead of us, but I look forward to becoming a strong and resilient voice in Congress and… (joining) my Republican colleagues to curb reckless spending, protect our southern border, protect the unborn, and rebuild our bankrupt economy. “

Moran also said in a statement that he voted for the new speaker of the House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy, a Republican from California.

“On behalf of the American people, the Republicans held a historic debate to determine the next speaker of the House of Representatives – something this country hasn’t seen in almost 100 years,” he said. “The transparency of this process provides credibility and strength in the outcome and in our next speaker.”

Moran added that the House of Representatives “is the body closest to the people” and is the best hope of preventing the Biden administration and the Democratic-controlled Senate from “pushing this country even further in the wrong direction.”

“In order to achieve our goal of restoring freedom and economic freedom to ordinary Americans, Republicans must now, despite minor differences within the party, come forward as a united front to resist the growing ideals of socialism that are infiltrating the ranks of the Democrats,” he said. .
