Muhlbauer has arrested the man who killed 5 people in South Kansas City

In September 2014, Brandon Howell went on a killing spree in southern Kansas. Howell killed five people in a neighborhood near Wornall Road and Blue Ridge Boulevard. Court documents say Howell tried to steal a vintage Jaguar from a home and severely beat the elderly couple who lived there, George and Ann Taylor. They later died in an area hospital. Howell was also accused of shooting and killing the Taylors’ neighbors Lorene Hurst, his son Darrel Hurst and Susan Choucron. A Jackson County jury convicted Howell. That conviction may not have been possible without the actions of fallen Kansas City police officer James Muhlbauer. Muhlbauer was working nights when he saw Howell near Interstate 29 and Northwest Barry Road. He started chasing him on foot and at one point chased him across a highway. “It was one night in 2014 when Jim singled out a murder suspect, a man who brutally murdered five people in South Kansas City that day,” said Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves. “Jim was on his own and chased him across the busy highway in the dark. Kansas City was safer that night thanks to Jim.”
