New Austin mayor and council members to take office Friday

Austin (KXAN) — Austin’s newly elected mayor and five city council members will be sworn in Friday night.

Mayor Elect Kirk Watson, District 1 Councilor Natasha Harper-Madison, District 3 Councilor Elect Jose Velasquez, District 5 Councilor Elect Ryan Alter, District 8 Councilor Paige Ellis, and District 9 Councilor Elect Zohaib “Zo” Kadri will be sworn in to ceremony at 6:00 p.m. in the Austin City Hall Council Chamber.

Harper-Madison and Ellis were re-elected to their respective seats in November.

After the inauguration, council members will elect a new Pro-Tem Mayor. Alison Alter is currently the mayor of Pro-Tem.

Mayor-elect Watson’s first term will be two years because voters amended the city charter to align the mayoral election with the presidential election starting in 2024. The term of office of a council member will last four years.

Both the mayor and council members can serve a maximum of two terms.
