New Texas law cuts property taxes for the elderly and disabled

TECHARCANA, Texas. The new Texas property tax revision is welcome news for homeowners with disabilities and seniors.

Senate Bill 12 was written by Senator Paul Betancourt and limits the amount a school district can charge in property taxes for elderly homeowners or those with disabilities.

This bill was written in response to a school funding review passed in 2019 that gave school districts additional public money so local property tax rates could be reduced. But this law did not entitle elderly and disabled homeowners to the same discount.

The new law, which now cuts property taxes for seniors and homeowners with disabilities, went into effect Jan. 1.
