Actor Jeremy Renner was trying to stop his snowplow from hitting his nephew when he was pulled under a car and crushed on New Year’s Day, police said.
The Pistenbully snowcat began sliding sideways shortly after the Hawkeye actor used it to pull his nephew’s truck out of a snowdrift near Reno, Nevada, according to an edited report from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office obtained by CNN.
When he failed to stop the plow, Renner, 52, jumped out of the car without applying the emergency brake.
“As soon as he got off the Pistenbully, he knew he was heading straight for (his nephew),” the report says. “He was afraid Pistenbully would hit (his nephew) so he decided to try and stop or distract Pistenbully.”
According to the report, Renner was dragged under a car and knocked over during his heroic effort. He was airlifted to the hospital and treated for more than 30 broken bones.
“While the Pistenbully had some mechanical problems, based on our mechanical inspection, it is believed that the parking brake will prevent the Pistenbully from moving forward,” police said.
The report also indicated that the brake indicator in the car’s cab was not working and noted that “mechanical problems may have been the cause of this accident.”
Earlier this week, Renner took to Instagram to thank everyone for their love and support.
“I want to thank EVERYONE for their messages and care for my family and me…. With love and gratitude to all of you,” he wrote. “These 30+ broken bones will mend, become stronger, just as love and connection with family and friends will deepen. Love and blessings to all of you.”
