Police say a 6-year-old shot and killed a teacher in a classroom in Virginia.

NEWPORT NEWS, Virginia. A six-year-old student shot and wounded a Virginia teacher Friday during an altercation in a first-grade classroom, police and officials at a Newport News school said.

No students were injured in the shooting at Richnek Primary School, police said. The teacher, a woman in her 30s, received life-threatening injuries. Newport News Police Chief Steve Drew told reporters that by evening her condition had improved somewhat.

The police said that a child in the class had a gun and that they took him into custody.

“We didn’t have a situation where someone walked around the school shooting,” Drew told reporters. “We have a situation in one particular place where the shot was fired.”

He added that the shooting was not an accident.

Parents and students reunited at the gym door, according to the Newport News Public Schools Facebook.

Newport News is a city of about 185,000 people in southeastern Virginia, famous for its shipyard, which builds aircraft carriers and other ships of the US Navy.

According to the Virginia Department of Education website, Richneck has about 550 students who study from kindergarten through fifth grade. The school management has already announced that there will be no classes at the school on Monday.
