Schumer refuses to approve Sinema 2024 re-election

Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (DN.Y.) on Tuesday declined to say whether he would support Independent Senator Kirsten Sinema (Arizona) if she ran for re-election, though he praised her as a “great” senator.

“Look, Senator Cinema is a great member of Congress and a member of the Senate, and she has done a lot of good here, but it’s too early to make a decision,” Schumer told reporters when asked if he would support Blue over the Democratic nominee. .

Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-Arizona) officially announced his intention to run for the Democratic Senate in Arizona on Monday, creating a potential three-way race.

Cinema announced last month that it would leave the Democratic Party and register as an independent. She has not yet said whether she will run for a second term.

Other Senate Democrats on Monday dodged questions about whether they would support Sinema instead of the Democratic nominee in next year’s race, saying it was too early to back the nominee before Sinema announced its plans for the future.

Both Senate Majority Dick Durbin (D-Illinois) and Senate Democratic Committee Chairman Gary Peters (D-Michigan) declined to endorse Sinema this week.

McConnell on Tuesday appeared to be enjoying the dilemma his fellow Democrats faced over whether to support Cinema, Gallego or another candidate in next year’s race.

“Sep. Cinema played an important role in the United States Senate, the most important thing she did was save the institution itself by protecting the filibuster, ”he said. “She also played a significant role in the bipartisan deals reached in the Senate,” referring to the 117 infrastructure and gun violence bills.th Congress.

“As far as whether she decides to run again, that’s really her decision, and I think the Democratic majority in the Senate has a big dilemma to decide whether to support her or support someone running for the Democratic side,” he said.
