NEWPORT NEWS, Virginia (WAVY) — Police responded to a shooting at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News Friday afternoon.
The school is located at 205 Tyner Drive off Jefferson Avenue.
The first call about the incident to the control room was received at 14:00.
Newport News Public Schools confirmed that the teacher was injured and is being treated at a local hospital.
NNPS said the person responsible for the shooting is in police custody.
The school system sent information about the incident to the Richneck families by phone and email, and posted it on social media.
The students were not hurt. Police also said it was no longer an active situation with the shooter.
NNPD chief Steve Drew spoke to the media on Friday afternoon.
He said that after the incident, all the children were transferred to the gym and are safe.
Police said they are currently working to reunite parents with students. It takes place outside the doors of the Richneck Gym. Parents and guardians must present a photo ID to pick up a child.
According to Chief Drew, they’re dropping students by grade.
