AUSTIN (KXAN) — South Congress Books will move to a new location in 2023, the company announced in a Facebook post on New Year’s Eve.
The bookstore, located at 1608 S. Congress Ave., opened in the summer of 2011. Its last day of operation outside of Southern Congress is January 8, with a reopening scheduled for March at 3703 Kerbey Lane. The new location will be across the street from the original Kerbey Lane Cafe.
In a separate Facebook post, store executives attributed the move to rising rental costs along the South Congress.
“Perhaps many of you will not be surprised to learn that we have been expelled from the Southern Congress, so we are moving in January,” the post read in part. “Why such a short time? We negotiated to the very end and just last week we signed a new lease.”
The shop will operate a small outpost at Uncommon Objects before it officially opens on Kirby Lane, the post said.
“Our new location is a vintage bungalow on Kirby Lane, directly across from the original iconic café. It’s cozy, charming and even has a yard,” the post continued. “Watch out for future events at 3703 Kerbey Lane.”
From Jan. 2 to Jan. 8, the store revealed that it will also be withdrawing merchandise at 20% off due to the upcoming move.
