Texas medical schools accused of racial bias against white men

A white man who was denied admission to six public medical schools in Texas later sued them for allegedly discriminating against him because of his race.

George Stewart accused six schools of violating US laws that prohibit federally funded educational programs from discriminating on the basis of race and gender, according to the lawsuit, filed in early January.

The six schools include:

  • Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center
  • Dell School of Medicine at the University of Texas at Austin
  • McGovern School of Medicine at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center at Houston
  • John Seeley School of Medicine at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston
  • Long School of Medicine at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center at San Antonio
  • University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center

This is the latest challenge to the affirmative action policy commonly used by US schools to increase enrollment of black, Hispanic, and female students.

According to the documents, Stewart applied and did not pass during the 2021-2022 application cycle. He later requested enrollment data for six schools.

“The data show that the average and average scores and MCAT scores of accepted black and Hispanic students are significantly lower than the average and MCAT scores of accepted white and Asian students,” the lawsuit says, alleging that schools prioritize women, blacks and Latin Americans.

Lawsuit documents state that Stewart believed he would be a good candidate for admission to Texas medical schools based on his education and work experience, adding that schools “using racial and gender preference in their admissions allow applicants with lower academic data to come at the expense of the rejected. candidates with the best academic data.

Stewart will reapply to six medical schools under the lawsuit, but wants schools to be prohibited from considering race in the admissions process and selecting applicants “with color blindness and racially neutrality.”

America First Legal filed suit on Stewart’s behalf. The AFL is a conservative group founded by Stephen Miller, a top aide to former President Donald Trump.

Texas Tech University and the University of Texas System did not immediately respond to questions.
