Texas Softball finished third in the Big 12 Conference Coaches

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Texas softball team hit the top at just the right time last season and went all the way to the Women’s College World Series, so what will the club do to encore this season?

As far as the Big 12 conference coaches are concerned, the Longhorns are ranked among the best in the league in 3rd place in a pre-season poll released Wednesday.

The Longhorns earned 28 poll points, trailing defending national champions Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. The Sooners received six of the seven first-place votes in the poll, while the Cowgirls received the remaining one. Baylor, Iowa, Texas Institute of Technology and Kansas completed the survey.

The Longhorns begin the season on February 10 in Clearwater, Florida with five games in the Division I NFCA Leadoff Classic. They will play two doubleheaders and one game over three days, playing Missouri and the Northwest in the first double run, then Tennessee and Illinois in another on Feb. 11. The Longhorns will finish the tournament against Kentucky on February 12 before their rookie home on February 15 against Lamar.

Texas ended their fall schedule 3-1 with a win over McLennan Community College, St. Mary’s and Odessa College. The Longhorns lost the fall game to Texas State, 8–7.

Mia Scott hit .377 last season and should secure the infield for the Longhorns this season. Alyssa Popelka hit. .348, and Courtney Day hit .300 last year, along with other top returning hitters. Last year, Estelle Cech had 103.2 innings, posting a 13-2 record in 16 starts with 83 strikeouts and a 3.24 ERA.
