Corpus Christie, Texas (ValleyCentral) — A 70-year-old woman pleaded guilty to possession of more than 200 pounds of marijuana for the purpose of distribution, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Texas.
On September 11, 2022, K-9 alerted Border Patrol agents at the Falfurrias checkpoint that Diana Vela, 70, was carrying drugs in a Ford Fusion sedan she was driving.
Upon further investigation, it was determined that Vela was carrying 10 large sealed bundles of marijuana weighing over 200 pounds in her trunk.
According to prosecutors, the market value of drugs was more than $1 million.
Vele’s verdict is due on 12 April. She is allowed to remain on bail until the hearing.
At the time, she faces up to 40 years in prison, as well as a possible maximum fine of $1 million.
