KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas citizens may be wondering who is behind one of the most visible portions of Chiefs Kingdom located in downtown Kansas City.
“We will light up the building as we always do in support of the Chiefs,” said Derek McCann, chief executive officer of the Kansas City Marriott Downtown.
Greg Brinkerhoff, director of engineering, also plays a role.
“We light up the center,” he said.
For years, the Marriott Downtown’s facade has gleamed and showcased pride in the hometown’s heroes, teams, and causes.
McCann and Brinkerhoff are underpinning the effort as the Kansas City Chiefs head to the AFC championship.
“You can’t lose it, can you?” McCann said. “It’s right there, it’s just special.”
For years they have created a very tall building.
“The best view is just after sunset, when it’s still twilight and you get the color—you can still see the sun setting in the distance,” Brinkerhoff said.
It’s what Chiefs Kingdom loves to see.
“Probably one of the best skylines in the city, with everything turning red with the Chiefs and all,” a KSHB 41 News viewer said.
McCann says it’s their way of giving back to Kansas City.
“We are proud of the city’s proud hotel,” McCann said.
The Marriott Downtown says it’s making big changes for sports fans, including a 30-foot video wall all before draft this spring.
