Titans hire 49ers’ Ran Carton as 14th general manager

NASHVILLE, Tennessee.Tennessee Titans hired San Francisco-based human resources director Ran Carton as their general manager.

The Titans announced their hiring on Wednesday morning, ending the search, which officially began on January 12. Cardboard would become the franchise’s first CEO. It is tentatively scheduled to be presented at a press conference on Friday.

Controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk, who led the search committee that interviewed seven candidates, said in a statement that they are pleased to add Carton, with his varied experience as a player, scout and personnel manager.

“I was impressed by his innate leadership qualities and ability to get along with people,” Strunk said. “Because talent assessment is critical to this role, the lineup they built in San Francisco stands out. He was instrumental in building one of the best teams in our league.”

Carton will be the sixth minority among the last eight general managers hired by the NFL, which has run two programs since late May to promote more minority candidates to front office positions. Karton, who will turn 42 on February 10, attended the first meeting in May last year.

Carton joined San Francisco in 2017 along with coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch. Since then, the 49ers have made the playoffs three times, winning two division titles and the 2019 NFC Championship. The 49ers have had seven Pro Bowl picks in 2021 and six this season.

The 49ers will take on Dallas on Sunday night in the NFC Divisional Round as the runner-up.

Carton began his career in San Francisco as Director of Professional Human Resources and was promoted to his final position in 2021. In this position, he assessed top college candidates and also assessed free agents awaiting inclusion on the team’s target roster.

Carton, who also interviewed last year for general manager positions with the Chicago and New York Giants, worked for the Rams between 2012 and 2016 as director of professional staff. He started as a professional scout in Atlanta from 2008 to 2011.

Carton played in Florida and was part of the Gators’ 2000 Southeastern Conference championship team. He spent three years in the NFL as an undrafted free agent, starting with Indianapolis in 2004, and played in nine games with the Colts between 2005 and 2006.

Carton was born in Osceola, Arkansas and received his bachelor’s degree in sociology from Florida after ending his playing career in 2008. .

His father, Maurice, played in the NFL and coached seven teams.
