NEW BROWNFELS, TX — According to the New Braunfels Police Department, two San Antonio teenagers were arrested in New Braunfels after they were caught breaking into cars and then leading police on a chase early Tuesday morning.
Joe Angel Puente, 18, and an unidentified 16-year-old were taken into police custody.
Shortly before 9 a.m., police officers arrived at the 600 block of North Business 35 after a call came in that several men were forcibly breaking into cars in the mall’s parking lot, according to police.
The police said that the police arrived and saw three people trying to escape in a gray car. It was then, according to police, that the car was chasing officers down North Business 35, shortly before crashing into a curb near the intersection of Hidalgo Avenue.
The three suspects then attempted to escape, but two suspects were detained by the police, police said. However, the third suspect remains at large and is believed to have fled the area.
Authorities say officers found many stolen items inside the vehicle, including weapons, electronics and illegal drugs.
Puente was taken to the Comal County Jail and charged with car theft, arrest evasion, illegal possession of a weapon, and involvement in organized crime. Police said the unidentified teenager was taken to a juvenile detention center and also charged with the same crimes.
The NBPD reported that due to police action, there were two short lockouts at Lone Star Elementary as a precautionary measure.
Police said the car theft investigation and the search for a third suspect are ongoing.
