After winning Super Bowl LVII, the Kansas City Chiefs are finally in offseason mode. The title is the second time in five years with Patrick Mahomes at quarterback. While QB has remained a constant for the team, many of the parts for the 2022 Chiefs looked different from the winning team in 2022. Even with a young roster, there will also be many new faces on the 2023 Chiefs roster. make decisions once free agency begins in March. Several key players for the championship team were with the team on one-year contracts or at the end of their contracts. The legal tampering period begins for NFL free agency on March 13. Teams will release players to enter under the salary cap by the start of the new league year on March 16. One of the more notable names on the list includes wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster, who was second on the team in receiving yards behind Travis Kelce in 2022. Smith-Schuster had a reliable and, at times, compelling year, even if insignificant, with the team. The wideout has shown interest in returning to Kansas City. WR Mecole Hardman may have played his last snaps for the team after his rookie contract ended. The talented but underperforming wideout finished the year on injured reserve and will likely have more money in free agency than the team is willing to pay. The other notable offensive free agents are tackles Andrew Wylie and Orlando Brown Jr. The two veterans were good, if not amazing tackles for the Chiefs. Wylie proved to be an economical and useful option for the team across the offensive line during his time with Kansas City. Brown Jr. will command a lot more money at left tackle. If the team is unable to reach an agreement with the young lineman before the 2023 season, he could play for the franchise once again. On the defensive end of the ball, safety Juan Thornhill, defenseman Derrick Nnadi, defenseman Khalen Saunder and defensive end Carlos Dunlap highlight the list. With the exception of Carlos Dunlap, the defenders are all homegrown Chiefs players. Each has been a useful role player who can walk away if he can command contracts from other NFL teams. Thornhill may be the most likely to leave the Chiefs in March for a bigger payday. Dunlap would play in his 14th season in the NFL if he returned to add to his impressive resume. If the Chiefs want the veteran back for another season, it’s entirely possible the pass rusher will come back with a cheap deal to chase down one more ring before retiring.
