Wild horses and donkeys will be adopted in the Valley

MERCEDES, TX (ValleyCentral) — The Bureau of Land Management will host a two-day event to host wild horses and donkeys in the Rio Grande Valley.

According to a BLM press release, the Mercedes event offers adult and yearling horses, as well as donkeys that once roamed freely on public lands in the west.

The Bureau periodically removes animals from pasture to keep herds healthy and to protect other sources of rangeland.

The event will begin at 10:00 am, Friday, January 27, at the Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show, located on the 1000 block of N. Texas Avenue in Mercedes.

The adoption will take place on Friday from noon to 6:00 pm and on Saturday, January 28 from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm.

The following requirements for applicants for adoption include:

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have no record of animal cruelty;
  • Homes must have at least 400 square feet of pens per animal with access to food, water, and shelter;
  • The fence must meet the height requirements:
    • Adult horses – 6 feet;
    • Yearlings – 5 feet; and
    • Donkeys – 4.5 feet; and
  • Trailers must be warehouse, covered, with swing gates and solid walls/floors.

BLM staff will approve applications and provide additional information to assist at the adoption event.
