Yakima Police officers are busy trying to send a message to motorists in Yakima to slow down and avoid running a red light. The officers are involved in continuous emphasis patrols where each officer must make 3 to 4 stops each day.
It cannot be said that the officers are not busy with traffic control
During the last 4 weeks of January, officers made a total of 2,908 traffic arrests and issued 1,398 citations to drivers. The officers say they are not only looking for sprinters and those who fail to stop at red lights, but are also focusing on finding drivers in trouble. In fact during the last 4 weeks of the month officers arrested 49 DUI drivers.Officers are also fining people who fail to stop for a red light. 61 drivers were cited for such a violation during the first three weeks of the month.
2022 has been a deadly year on the streets of Yakima
Last year was a deadly year in Yakima City, and the Yakima Police Chief wanted action taken. Police Chief Matthew Murray wrote a letter to the community late last year saying that “the culture of everything that happens on the streets of Yakima needs to change.” and motorcycles.

A bill proposed in the state legislature, if passed, could make Washington state only the second in the United States to lower the legal blood alcohol level for driving from 0.08 to 0.05. Dr. Richard Ries, head of the division of addictions in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Washington School of Medicine, says he expects traffic fatalities in Washington to decrease by about 20% if the bill becomes law.
