AND I AM KRIS KETZ GERARD LIGHTFOOT OF TONGANOXIE IS ACCUSED OF KILLING OFFICER JAMES BALBOA, HIS K-9 PARTNER, AND ANOTHER PERSON WALKING DOWN THE STREET. KMBC9 DANTE ALCOCK LIVE DOWNTOWN POLICE DISTRICT WITH NEW STORY DETAILS. MANNY All right, Chris. JARON LIGHTFOOT, 18, WHO TURNS 19 TOMORROW, MADE A BRIEF COURT APPEARANCE THIS AFTERNOON. HE IS NOW CHARGED ON TWO COUNTS OF INTENTIONAL HIT MURDER AFTER COURT RECORDS SHOW SURVEILLANCE VIDEO FROM A NEARBY CAR. LOT WILL BE VERY KEY IN THIS CASE. INVESTIGATORS SAY THE VIDEO SHOWED LIGHT FOOT SPEEDING SOUTH ON BENTON AND COLLAPSING WITH THE OFFICER’S CABINET, WHICH WAS LIGHTED GREEN WHILE TRAVELING EAST ON TRUMAN. POLICE SAY A CHECK OF LIGHTFOOT’S CAR COMPUTER FOUND JUST TWO AND A HALF SECONDS BEFORE THE CRASH. LIGHTFOOT PRESSED FULL FOOT ON THE ACCELERATOR AND REACHED A TOP SPEED OF 89.7 MILES PER HOUR JUST 2 SECONDS BEFORE THE CRASH. I HOPE LAWYERS AND I HOPE PROSECUTORS AND JUDGES SEE THE EFFECTS OF A DEATH LIKE JIMMY’S ON SOCIETY AND WHAT WE DO FOR A LIVING AND IMPOSE WHAT THEY MUST IMPOSE. AND A JACKSON COUNTY ATTORNEY SPEAKER TELLS US, SORRY, THERE IS NO EVIDENCE THAT LIGHTFOOT WAS UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF ALCOHOL OR DRUGS AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT. THE WORST-SCENARIO FOR HIM, IF HE IS FOUND GUILTY, IS THAT HE SPENDS A MAXIMUM OF 20 YEARS IN PRISON, WHICH MEANS THAT HE WOULD BE A FREE MAN BEFORE HE TURNED 40. Kansas City Police Officer James Muhlbauer is remembered for being a “good cop” and a hard worker. Kansas City Police Fraternal Order president Brad Lemon had known Muhlbauher since he began working at the Kansas City Police Department two decades ago. “One of the good cops out there,” he said. “A hard worker.” Muhlbauer leaves behind a wife and 10-year-old son, Lemon told KMBC. And not having a father at football games or, you know, graduations and everything, it’s different for them. Court documents released Friday show Jerron Lightfoot’s vehicle that crashed into the “Muhlbauer’s car reached over 89 miles per hour before crashing into it. Court documents released Friday show Jerron Lightfoot’s vehicle that crashed into Muhlbauer’s cruiser reached over 89 miles per hour before crashing into it.
He was speeding into Benton before crashing into the police vehicle.
“It’s one of the things that we don’t talk about enough is just the random stuff that happens to us when we’re out there,” Lemon said.
