Severe to severe thunderstorms possible as rain rolls through the Kansas City area

Scattered rain and thunderstorms are expected to sweep through the Kansas City area on Wednesday, bringing some severe to severe thunderstorms to the metro region, according to the Kansas City National Weather Service.

“There remains a slight risk of some severe thunderstorms from late morning to mid-afternoon,” the weather service said on social media. “Damaging winds and locally heavy rains are the biggest concerns with the strongest storms.”

Areas south and east of the Kansas City metropolitan area are most at risk from severe weather. Moderate to heavy rainfall in southwestern Missouri and central and eastern parts of the state could see localized flooding. The risk of a tornado from storms is low.

The Weather Service advises people to be aware of the weather and have several ways to receive severe weather warning information.

Temperatures are expected to climb into the upper 60s Wednesday in the Kansas City area.

A strong cold front forecast through Wednesday night will usher in strong, gusty winds and send temperatures plummeting.

Wind chills will range from single digits to teens on Thursday morning. Afternoon temperatures should not exceed freezing.

The chill returns overnight, with temperatures dipping into the teens. Chills of -10 to 5 degrees are possible on Friday morning, according to the meteorological service.

Warmer conditions are expected this weekend. Kansas City could see temperatures of around 50 degrees on Saturday and around 60 degrees on Sunday.
