Matt Nagy is back in a familiar role.
The Chiefs made an expected move within the coaching staff on Friday promoting Nagy from quarterbacks coach to offensive coordinator.
Nagy replaces Eric Bieniemy, who recently accepted the assistant head coach/offensive coordinator position with the Washington commanders.
Nagy joined the Chiefs staff in 2013 as quarterbacks coach before receiving a 2016 promotion to offensive coordinator, a title he held for two seasons (2016-17). Nagy then became the head coach of the Chicago Bears in 2018, but was fired after the 2021 regular season.
Chiefs coach Andy Reid brought back Nagy in February 2022 to serve as senior assistant and quarterbacks coach. The hiring also reunited Nagy with quarterback Patrick Mahomes, whom the Chiefs selected in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft.
With Nagy serving as his position coach in 2022, Mahomes finished the regular season leading the NFL in passing yards (5,240) and touchdown passes (41) en route to being named the league MVP. Mahomes also earned MVP honors from Super Bowl LVII.
The Chiefs will now be looking to fill the quarterbacks coach position. Current pass game analyst/assistant quarterbacks coach David Girardi is a likely infield candidate.
