Assault on prisoner 2.24.23
On February 24, 2023, at approximately 9:00 am, an inmate was attacked with an improvised weapon, in a housing unit of the Sedgwick County Detention Facility, by another inmate. The makeshift weapon was recovered by staff members.
The victim was transported to an area hospital by emergency medical services, treated for his injuries and released back to the detention facility. The Sheriff’s Office’s Investigations Division has been contacted and is investigating the scene.
The victim of this incident is a 37-year-old black male from Wichita. He has been in custody since November 3, 2022, charged with theft and possession with intent to use narcotic paraphernalia.
The suspect in this incident is a 41-year-old black male from Wichita. He has been in custody since January 13, 2021, charged with two counts of first-degree murder.
This is the only inmate improvised weapon assault of 2023 for the Sedgwick County Detention Facility. The motive for the attack is not known. It is currently unknown if the incident was gang-related.
Ensuring the safety and security of inmates, staff and the facility is of paramount importance to the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office. This incident is under investigation for criminal conduct as well as a review of the circumstances surrounding the manufacture of the improvised cutting device.
