Discourse Brewing works to bring a new tavern to Overland Park

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. —Beer lovers may soon be sampling fresh flavors at a new microbrewery in Overland Park.

The Overland Park Planning Commission unanimously approved a 10-year special use permit (SUP) on Monday to operate a microbrewery at 7211 W 97th St.

Discourse Brewing will occupy the former Pacific Mutual Doors space in Windmill Square. Owner Matt Britton plans to renovate the 2,975-square-foot space with updated restrooms, a brewery with storage, a dining room for guests to enjoy their brew, and a covered outdoor patio.

The proposed layout will also give guests the opportunity to see how their beer is made with a clear view from the brewing room to the brewing area.

“I really like this location for a microbrewery, I think it’s dynamite,” said Commissioner Steve Troester. “Not only will it give Windmill Square a little more life, but I mean you could have your beer sample and then walk down the driveway to Jack Stack for the BBQ. If you train at Metcalf’s Gym on Metcalf’s Old South Site, you can have a beer after your workout.

Overland Park City Council will be considering final approval for the SUP on Monday 6 March.
