He thought he had won $100, but then the man from Missouri checked his Powerball ticket again

When a Missouri man woke up at midnight to check the Powerball numbers, the sight of the winning numbers left him restless.

The Jefferson City man won $50,000 in the Feb. 6 Powerball draw but was initially skeptical, lottery officials said in a Feb. 15 news release.

“I checked my numbers and saw that I matched the Powerball,” the man, who chose not to be named, told Missouri Lottery officials. “Then I started reading and I guessed one, two, three numbers… and I said, ‘Wait a minute, there’s a fourth number!'”

His ticket had four of the numbers in the draw, with the winning numbers 5, 11, 22, 23, 69 and the Powerball number 7.

He said he thought he had won $100 until he reviewed the ticket.

“I had to go check out the prize for matching four white balls — then I saw I won $50,000,” she said. “I was ecstatic.”

After a sleepless night, the next morning he went to collect his prize. The man told lottery officials that he plans to use part of the winnings for a family trip to Hawaii.

Jefferson City is approximately 150 miles southeast of Kansas City.
