Addressing the campaign, Annamalai said, “DMK has failed to deliver on its campaign promises. Instead, what you get is a useless pressure cooker that will burst.”

He said the BJP has contacted the Election Commission regarding the distribution of “freebies”.

“The free distribution of pressure cookers and silk saris is happening right under the watch of State Election Commission observers. The BJP has taken up the matter with ECI. AIADMK has gone to court on this issue. DMK thinks they can win by handing out freebies “. he said.

Annamalai further said that he is confident that NDA candidate KS Thennarasu will win by a huge margin.

“The vote will be against the DMK government as it has failed in all its responsibilities including law and order. We are confident that NDA candidate KS Thennarasu will win by a huge margin. DMK cannot take the people of the state for granted,” he added.

The matter concerns a video shared by AIADMK spokesman and IT Wing Zone Secretary Kovai Sathyan, in which a woman can be seen with the pressure cooker, which was allegedly given to her for casting her vote on the symbol of “hand” (Congress).

In the video, the woman could be asked which symbol, if she was asked to vote. To this, she replied “Hand”. She also says the pressure cookers are distributed on a “per vote” basis.

In January, by-elections were announced for Erode East constituency in Tamil Nadu on 27 February. The counting of votes will take place on 2 March.

The poll was prompted by the death of Congress MLA Thirumagan, a great-grandson of social reformer ‘Periyar’ EV Ramasamy and son of former Union Minister EVKS Elangovan.

The BJP has officially announced its support for candidate from AIADMK’s Edappadi Palaniswami (EPS) faction in the upcoming preliminary poll Erode East.

EPS faction of AIADMK fielded KS Thennarasu as candidate for the seat.

BJP state chairman K Annamalai released a letter of support for KS Thennarasu’s candidacy.

This followed the withdrawal of candidate O Panneerselvam (OPS) T Senthilmurugan.

Congress declared former Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) head EVKS Elangovan as the party’s candidate for February 27 polls in Erode (East) assembly constituency. (ANI)
