John R. Mettner (Randy)

John R. Mettner, 80, of Topeka, passed away at his home in Sebring, Florida on December 14, 2022.

He was born in Little Rock, Arkansas on October 31, 1942. The son of John and Helen Mettner with one sibling, sister Marty Mettner McHenry.

Randy graduated from Washburn University School of Law in 1974.

Randy has dedicated his professional life as an attorney and judge advocate general in the United States Army for over 40 years. After retiring from the military, he worked for FEMA as a State Coordinating Officer / External Affairs for 4 years and then as the IGA’s External Affairs Officer for 11 years.

Randy was an avid golfer and a huge fan of KU football and basketball. He loved history and politics. He and his wife loved travelling, fishing and spending time with their grandchildren.

Randy has been married to his loving wife Kathleen (Kay) Mettner for 58 years. Sadly she too died in 2022. He is survived by 3 children; Alan Johnson, Michael and Bradley Mettner, eight grandchildren; Brett Cox, Zac and Jake Johnson, Davis and Corbin Mettner, Parker, Cade and Cami Mettner. Mothers-in-law of two daughters Kristina Ketz Mettner and Jennifer Cox Johnson, granddaughters Amy McDonald, Kellie Atkinson and Megan McHenry.

The family plans a celebration of life in Topeka at a later date.
